However, not everyone has a hat specially made for the occasion, like this medieval reader. Such entertaining marginal scenes are quite common in medieval books. This cat scene was likely meant to bring a smile to the beholder’s face. Mission accomplished!

I was introduced to Gates of Heaven at Champaign’s yearly Ebertfest in 2004. It’s such a charmingly funny and beautiful movie and it’s become one of my favorites. Thanks, Roger.
